Reducing the Risk of Dryer Fires
4/14/2021 (Permalink)
Dryer fires are a leading cause of residential fire damage in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 16,000 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year. These dryer fires cause around 13 deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in property loss. Following are a few ways to help prevent the risk of a dryer fire in your home, protecting yourself, your family, and your property:
- Clean the dryer vent running from the machine to the outside of your home out regularly: The leading cause of dryer fires, at 34%, is the failure to clean dryer vents, trapping heat and flammable lint material within the line.
- Clean the dryer lint filter inside of the machine after each load of laundry is dried. An abundance of lint in the filter restricts the flow of air to the machine.
- Occasionally check for and, if needed, repair damages to the vent pipes behind the machine.
- Make sure your machine is installed using the correct type of electrical plug and outlet per the manufacturer’s instructions.
