While Albany, GA, is known for its mild winters, it's essential to remember that winter storms can still strike unexpectedly. Being prepared for adverse weather conditions is crucial, even in areas less accustomed to heavy snowfall. In this blog post, your local SERVPRO® neighbor in Albany, GA, offers valuable tips on how to prepare for winter storms and what to do when they do strike.

Preparation is Key:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and stay informed about potential winter storms approaching Albany, GA. Stay connected to your community's emergency notification systems and know where to find updates.

  2. Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies, including non-perishable food, water, blankets, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications. Store your kit in a readily accessible location in your Albany, GA, home.

  3. Heating Equipment: Ensure that your heating equipment, whether it's a furnace, fireplace, or space heater, is in good working condition. Have them inspected and serviced regularly to prevent potential fire hazards or breakdowns during a winter storm.

  4. Winterize Your Home: Seal any gaps or cracks in doors and windows to prevent drafts. Insulate your Albany, GA, home to conserve heat. Disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent freezing, and insulate exposed pipes to prevent burst pipes during freezing temperatures.

  5. Vehicle Preparation: If you need to drive during a winter storm in Albany, GA, make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. Check your tires, brakes, and battery. Keep an emergency kit in your car, including a blanket, flashlight, and non-perishable snacks.

When the Storm Strikes:

  1. Stay Inside: During a winter storm, the safest place to be is indoors. Avoid unnecessary travel and stay off the roads to reduce the risk of accidents.

  2. Keep Warm: If you experience a power outage in Albany, GA, use your emergency heating equipment safely and responsibly. Dress in layers to stay warm and conserve body heat.

  3. Prevent Frozen Pipes: Let your faucets drip to prevent pipes from freezing. If you suspect frozen pipes, leave the affected faucets on and apply gentle heat with a hairdryer or warm towels.

  4. Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: If using a generator or alternative heating source indoors, ensure proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. Install carbon monoxide detectors in your Albany, GA, home to monitor air quality.

  5. Emergency Communication: Have a way to communicate with family members and loved ones. Make sure your mobile phones are fully charged and have backup power sources available.

  6. Check on Neighbors: If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbors in Albany, GA, check on their well-being during and after the winter storm. Offer assistance if needed.

  7. Report Emergencies: In case of emergencies, contact local authorities or emergency services immediately.

After the Storm:

  1. Assess Damage: Once it's safe to do so, assess any damage to your Albany, GA, property. Check for roof damage, fallen trees, and broken windows.

Homeowner's Guide to Preventing Storm Damage

For much of the country, summer means storms. Thunderstorms are a welcome relief from the heat of summer, but the same storms that bring relief from the heat can also lead to a damaged home. Homeowners can minimize the risk of Albany and Americus storm damage by preparing for the season and repairing the damage quickly.

Preventing Flood Damage
Hail, high winds and flooding are possible during a severe thunderstorm. To prepare for the storms ahead, consider hiring a professional to determine the elevation of the home and whether the home lies in a flood-prone area. Even homes that are typically not affected by flooding may be at-risk when rainfall amounts are higher than average for the region.

Homeowners should also be aware of how water travels on the property. For instance, homeowners should note whether rainwater drains away from or toward the home. A professional landscaping company can assist you in diverting water away from your home to minimize the risk of flooding.

Annual Maintenance for Homeowners
Clean gutters are essential when preventing Albany and Americus storm damage. Clean the gutters regularly during storm season, and check downspouts to ensure the water is draining away from the home. It is also important to examine windows to prevent Albany and Americus storm damage. Examine window wells after a minor rain, and make repairs if the window well isn't draining properly. To further weatherproof windows, apply fresh caulk around windows as needed to prevent leaks.

The roof is your first and most important line of defense against water damage. To ensure your roof is ready for severe storms, hire a professional roofing company to examine the home for signs of damage, and make any necessary repairs immediately.

Preparing Your Basement for Heavy Rains
Basements are particularly prone to flooding, but can be protected with regular maintenance. To prevent water damage, check the sump pump after storms to ensure it is working properly, and use a non-GFI power source to power the pump. If valuable items are stored in the basement, place the items in a secure location off the basement floor.

To further prevent damage, check the basement immediately after severe storms and whenever heavy rains occur. Even a small amount of standing water can cause serious damage to the home and your belongings.

If you are planning a summer vacation, leave a house key with a trusted neighbor who can inspect the basement for storm damage while you are away. SERVPRO can assist you with any preparations or repairs that you need to make your home weather-resistant for the summer season.

Let’s Talk Tornadoes…

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

Tornado on Open Land Tornadoes in the forecast? Have a PLAN to keep yourself safe!

Residents and business owners throughout Southwest Georgia are, unfortunately, all too familiar with the “BEEP, BEEP, BEEP” of a severe weather alert, having their home or business fall under a thunderstorm watch or warning, and having to prepare for a variety of possible issues from Mother Nature all throughout the year. When talking about severe weather, one of the most dangerous, and damaging, types of systems to be prepared for is a TORNADO.  Understanding the what, how, and why of tornadoes can help you to plan, prepare, and keep yourself SAFE during severe weather!

So, let’s start with the basics…

What (exactly) is a tornado?

Weather.gov defines a tornado as “a violently column of air touching the ground, usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm.”  These winds from a tornado can reach up to 300 miles per hour, and the path of damage created can be more than one mile wide and fifty miles long.

Tornadoes in Georgia

Tornadoes are most likely to occur in Georgia between the months of March-May but can take place any time of year depending on atmospheric conditions.  According to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, tornadoes are Georgia’s number one weather related killer, so it is imperative to have an emergency plan in place prior to a storm’s arrival.

Tornado Preparation

Although tornadoes can spawn and travel very quickly, it is important to always have a way to receive weather alerts and follow the guidance provided by local authorities.  Have a designated safe room: an area centrally located within your home and away from windows.  Shelter on the lowest level of the structure you are within if you are in the forecasted impact area.

After a Tornado

If a tornado has impacted your local area, think safety first!  Avoid downed power lines, stay out of damaged buildings, and watch for hazards such as broken glass.  Continue to follow the direction of local authorities in the area.

In the unfortunate event that a tornado causes damage to your home or business, know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help.  Serving communities throughout Southwest Georgia, our team of highly trained professionals will work diligently to provide the highest possible level of customer service while repairing your property.  To learn more about the services we offer, request assistance, or for any other questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call: 229-439-2048.

Combating Storm Anxiety

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

Lighting striking across a purple sky Follow these tips to help reduce storm anxiety!

While many people find drizzling rains, the distant clap of thunder, or increased winds to be relaxing, aka “the perfect sleeping weather,” many others experience anxiety related to stormy conditions.  Whether a result of previous experience with storms, a sensitivity to loud noises, or another factor entirely, having storm anxiety can be very difficult to overcome, especially for younger children.  When storms are forecasted for your community, there are steps that can be taken to help reduce anxiety once the storm hits:

  • Pay close attention to the forecast so that you are aware of the projected intensity of the upcoming weather. Extreme weather scenarios are often accompanied by thunderstorm and/or tornado warnings, evacuation recommendations, or shelter in place orders.  Always trust the advice of local and state authorities when it comes to safety precautions that can be taken.
  • Have activities available for children to occupy them during a storm. Examples include coloring books, puzzles, or board games.  Having planned activities for adults that suffer from storm anxiety may also be beneficial.
  • Explain to children what is going on during a storm; allow them to ask questions to make sure they understand the weather around them.

For many, storm can be scary, especially when they are severe.  In the event that stormy weather has resulted in property damage to your home or business, know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is equipped, trained, and prepared to help.  Serving communities throughout Southwest Georgia, our team offers 24/7 emergency response, and has the support of nearly 2,000 nationwide franchises for large storm response needs.  To learn more about our services or request assistance, please give us a call at 229-439-2048!

Watches vs. Warnings – What’s The Difference?

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

Thunderstorm on the horizon Know the difference between watches and warnings to protect yourself during a severe weather situation!

We’ve all heard our local news teams and meteorologists broadcast things like “a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for your area” or “tornado warnings are in effect for the following county until 6:00 PM CST”, but what does this information really mean?

Understanding the difference between watches and warnings when it comes to weather events is paramount in protecting both yourself and your property from disaster.  The difference between the two defines HOW you should prepare, WHAT actions you need to take, and WHEN things should be set in motion.  The National Weather Service defines severe weather watches and warnings in the following ways:

Watch: Be Prepared! Severe weather is possible in and near the watch area.  Stay informed and be ready to act if a warning is issued.  The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.

Warning: Take Action! Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.  Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property.  Take shelter in a substantial building.  Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds.  Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a city or small county) that may be impacted by large hair, damaging winds, or tornadic activity.

Always have a way to receive weather alerts, follow the guidance provided by local authorities, and make your personal safety the top priority during severe weather events.  When damaging weather does strike, know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help restore your home or business.  As your locally owned and operated cleanup and restoration specialists, our team has the training, experience, and equipment to handle losses of all sizes.  Proudly serving the communities of Americus, Dawson, Unadilla, and surrounding areas, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Severe Weather Forecasted? Prepare Your Property to Reduce Risk of Damages!

7/20/2021 (Permalink)

Person cleaning out a rain gutter Prepare NOW for future stormy weather!

Stormy, and sometimes severe, weather, including heavy rain, lightning strikes, and tornadoes is all too common in Southwest Georgia.  While SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help by responding to mitigate and restore your property AFTER damages have occurred, we would also like to share with you some tips for preparing your property for stormy weather, in hopes of reducing your risk of damages:

  • Clean Out Your Rain Gutters: Clogged rain gutters allow rainwater to pool on your roof, increasing the risk of water damage. Regularly cleaning out your gutters allows water to flow away from your property.
  • Consider Installing Storm Shutters: Protecting your windows from wind-driven rain and flying debris during a severe weather event greatly reduces the possibility of damages to your property. This option also provides a safer environment for any occupants present during the weather event.
  • Secure or Store Outdoor Furniture: Especially during storms with higher wind gusts, unsecured furniture can quickly become dangerous to both people and property. Storing or securing these items provides less “ammunition” to cause damages.
  • Maintain Your Landscaping: Removing overhanging tree branches and trimming foliage regularly can provide protection for your property in multiple ways.  During a storm event, a well-maintained yard provides less material available to become wind-driven storm debris.  With less debris, there is also less matter to clog draining systems, reducing flooding risk.

Sometimes, even the best preparations are not enough to avoid storm damages.  For your “uh-oh” and “oh-no!” property damage moments, trust SERVPRO of Albany and Americus to help.  Serving the communities of Leesburg, Camilla, and surrounding areas, our team takes great pride in providing the highest possible level of customer service during times of disaster.  To request service, learn more about our offerings, or schedule an appointment with our team, please give us a call at 229-439-2048.  SERVPRO of Albany and Americus: “We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!”

When the Water Level Rises

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded neighborhood with SERVPRO logo Flood Damages? Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for your damage restoration needs!

What’s a common, and often quite damaging, occurrence when storms pass through?  You guessed it: FLOODING.  Not only can flood waters cause significant property damage, but they can also be dangerous to people and pets.  Understanding the different types of flooding that can occur in Southwest Georgia, as well as some general flood safety information, can help you better prepare and protect yourself during flood situations.

The National Severe Storms Laboratory defines three types of flooding that we may see in Southwest Georgia:

  • River flooding occurs when water levels rise over the top of riverbanks due to excessive rain from tropical systems making landfall, or persistent thunderstorms over the same area for extended periods of tim River flooding tends to happen more gradually, and it often closely and reported on by local authorities.  When river flooding occurs, it is important to try and stay out of the affected area, as moving flood waters can sweep people from their feet, and at high enough levels, sweep vehicles away.
  • Inland flooding occurs when moderate precipitation accumulates over several days, intense precipitation falls over a short period, or a river overflows because of a debris jam or dam or levee failure. In these instances, areas that commonly do not experience flood waters may be affected.  During periods of heavy rain and thunderstorm activity, it is important to stay weather aware, and if you encounter flood waters, turn around and find another route.
  • Flash flooding is caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than six hours. Flash floods are usually characterized by raging torrents after heavy rains that rip through riverbeds, urban streets, or mountain canyons. They can occur within minutes or a few hours of excessive rainfall. They can also occur even if no rain has fallen, for instance after a levee or dam has failed. Flash flooding is extremely dangerous, as little to no warning is often available.  Never attempt to drive or walk through flash flood waters, and if trapped in a flooded area, move to the highest possible ground away from the water.

Protecting yourself and your loved ones is the top priority during a flood, or other storm, situation.  Once the waters begin to recede, know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help with your property damage needs.  With the backing of over 1,700 franchises nationwide, we have the resources, expertise, and training to respond to losses of all sizes, and take great pride in being of service to our community.  To learn more about our services, please give us a call at 229-439-2048.

Hurricane Season is Here! Are You Prepared?

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Satellite image of Hurricane Michael in 2018 Are You Storm Ready? Hurricane Season is Here!

Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1st, and as many residents of the Southeastern United States know, it is imperative to be prepared in the event a hurricane heads their way.  Although not directly on the coast, our area has the possibility of experiencing hurricane conditions, which can lead to wind damage, flooding rains, or tornadoes, and because of this, having an emergency kit prepared is extremely important this time of year.

So, what should go into your Hurricane Preparedness Kit?  Ready.gov offers the following list as a guide:

  • Water – one gallon per person, per day, for several days.
  • Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery Powered or Hand Crank Radio
  • Flashlight
  • First Aid Kit
  • Batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust Mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic Sheeting & Duct Tape
  • Moist Towelettes
  • Garbage Bags
  • Wrench or Pliers
  • Manual Can Opener
  • Prescription Medications
  • Non-Prescription Medications (such as pain relievers and fever reducers)
  • Cash
  • Paper & Pencil
  • Matches or Lighter
  • Personal Hygiene Items

Also, if you have children or pets, be sure to prepare specific supplies for their needs, such as books and activities for children, or food bowl, water bowl, food, and leash for a pet.  Although preparation can be extensive, it is always better to find yourself having too much instead of too little in the case of a natural disaster emergency.

A huge storm has just rolled through, or your area has just survived a natural disaster.  You have survived and your family is safe but what about your pet?  Just like your family you need to have a disaster plan for your pets.  Here in Albany and Americus we are no stranger to extreme weather. What is good for you is good for your pets, so be prepared and have a plan. Planning ahead is the key to keeping yourself and your pets safe when a disaster strike!

  1. Microchip your pets

A microchip ID is the best way to ensure you are reunited with your pet if you are separated.  Also make sure you keep the microchip info updated: address or phone number changes are commonly overlooked.  If you don’t update the information it is useless.  You could also list an emergency number of a friend or family member who resides outside of your area.

  1. Keep A Collar and Tag on ALL Dogs & Cats

Make sure you have the pet's name and at least your current phone number (and address if possible) on the tag.  ID on indoor cats is especially important, if there is a disaster they could easily escape.

  1. Create a Buddy System

Create a buddy system in case you are not home. Make arrangements with a trusted neighbor to check on your pets.

  1. Identify Local Animal Shelters

Know where the local animal shelters are located in case your pet does get lost.  Have a current picture as well to help identify them.

  1. Locate a Local Veterinary Clinic

Locating a local veterinarian or animal hospital in the area you are staying in case your pet needs medical care.

  1. Plan a Pet Friendly-Place to Stay

Search in advance of pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, or somewhere you can stay.  Many emergency shelters are not pet-friendly.

  1. Prepare an Emergency Kit for EACH Animal

Stock up and be prepared now for items your pet will need during a disaster.  Store these items in an easy-to-grab container. Some basic items to include are: one-week food supply, one-week fresh water, medication your pet may need, copies of vaccination records, current picture of you with your pets to identity them and claim ownership, temporary ID tags with the contact info of someone in an unaffected area, carrier and/or leash for each animal.

Remember to prepare now, after the disaster has occurred it is too late.  The last thing you want after an emergency or disaster is to have something happen to your furry family members.

The FYI on Lightning

2/19/2021 (Permalink)

Lightning striking behind a house with SERVPRO logo If lightning, or other storm conditions, cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help!

Thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence in Southwest Georgia, and along with these storms often comes lightning.  Lightning strikes can be dangerous for both people and property, creating the possibility of bodily injury, risk of property fire, and electrical issues for homes or businesses.

Following are some tips from the National Weather Service to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe from lightning:

Lightning Safety Once Indoors:

  1. Stay off electronic equipment, such as computers or corded phones, that put you in direct contact with electricity.
  2. Avoid plumbing, such as sinks and bathtubs, as metal piping can transmit electrical current.
  3. Stay away from windows and doors; the safest area of the building is an interior room.
  4. Do not lean against concrete walls or lie on concrete floors.

Lightning Strike Outdoor Risk Reduction Tips:

If you find yourself outside with no shelter option during a lightning storm, the following actions can help reduce the risk of injury from a lightning strike:

  1. Search for lower ground- Avoid hills, cliffs, mountains, or any other natural structure elevates you.
  2. Immediately get out of and away from all bodies of water.
  3. Stay away from objects that can easily conduct electricity, such as metal fences and power lines.
  4. Never seek shelter under an isolated tree, as the tree can serve as a conductor for a lightning bolt.

Additionally, State Farm provides these tips for protecting your property from lightning during a thunderstorm:

  1. Use surge protectors for your electronic devices or consider installing a whole home surge protection system. Whole home systems absorb larger surges that come from outside your home. This device can be installed on the electrical meter by the utility company, or next to the electric service panel by an electrician.
  2. Have your property’s grounding system check by a professional. Many unsafe situations related to lighting occur when a home or business is not properly grounded, allowing electricity to flow through the walls, increasing the risk of fire.

If recent storms have caused damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048 for help.  Our team of highly trained professionals offers 24/7 emergency response and will help make your damage “Like it never even happened.”

While the spring season is known for the potential to experience severe weather, the threat exists throughout the summer months as well,. In fact, the potential for severe weather even increases in some areas. Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and runs through November 30th. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15th also ending November 30th.

While it may be difficult to prepare for the unpredictable, there are steps you can take now to ensure you are ready when disaster strikes. One way to prepare your business for any type of disaster, is to establish an Emergency READY Profile (ERP). Contact your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals to learn more about the ERP and how it can help you. Consider the following tips when preparing for an approaching storm.

Preparing for Severe Weather in Albany and Americus

Severe Weather Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

Preparing For Severe Weather

Are you ready if severe weather strikes your area tomorrow? Where you live will determine the type of storms you’re most likely to face. Follow these safety measures and general tips to help you prepare.

Preparing for a Tornado

Do the Following:

  • Follow the NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or TV newscasts. Obey the instructions given by local emergency officials.
  • Keep watch outside for signs of a tornado, like a dark sky, large hail, low-lying or fast-moving clouds, or roaring sounds.
  • Learn to recognize emergency alerts. The phrase "tornado watch" means a tornado is possible, while "tornado warning" means a funnel cloud has been spotted.
  • If a tornado warning is issued, immediately take shelter in the basement or storm cellar. If your home doesn’t have an underground room, hunker in an interior bathroom.

Preparing for a Thunderstorm

Thunderstorms are dangerous, as we have seen in the past, because they always produce lightning and can produce hail, strong winds, flash floods, tornadoes and wildfires. Thunderstorms can occur anywhere in the US and are most common during the summer.

Do the Following:

  • Prepare your home by shuttering windows and doors, and unplugging sensitive electronics.
  • Prepare your property by removing damaged tree branches that could fall during a storm, and bringing outdoor objects inside.
  • Watch the sky and tune in to your NOAA Weather Radio for information.
  • Learn to recognize emergency alerts. A "severe thunderstorm watch" means stormy conditions are likely to occur. A "severe thunderstorm warning" means they exist somewhere in the area.
  • If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, danger is imminent. Seek shelter immediately. Stay in a hard-topped vehicle if there are no buildings.

Understanding the difference between a TORNADO WARNING and TORNADO WATCH

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Team We are ready for whatever happens. Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for more information at 229-439-2048!

Tornadoes can happen any time of the year. Timing of the system can change but nighttime tornadoes are always more dangerous and require additional planning. The difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning means the difference between taking action or taking precautions.

Know your severe weather terminology.

During a TORNADO WATCH you want to be prepared because a tornado is possible. Which means that conditions are favorable for a tornado to occur.

1. Check for forecast updates.

2. Monitor sky conditions.

3. Know where to take shelter.

During a TORNADO WARNING take action because a tornado is imminent! A warning means that a tornado has been seen or picked up by radar. A warning requires you to take shelter and brace for a potential tornado.

1. Take shelter immediately.

2. Seek further information.

3. Check for forecast updates.

If you have any questions or have been a victim of a tornado and need our assistance WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus today at 229-439-2048!

Approaching 2020 Hurricane Season

Storm Image Call SERVPRO of Albany & Americus at 229-439-2048

As the 2020 hurricane season approaches, we at SERVPRO of Albany & Americus want to help make sure you are prepared. After recently going through Hurricane Michael, we here in south GA understand that it is not just states that are bordering the ocean that can be affected. These storms are very unpredictable and you can never be too prepared.

While preparing for hurricane season, follow the latest health guidelines from the CDC and your local officials.

Make a list of items to replenish your hurricane supplies and begin to assemble them before hurricane season begins. Just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a LONG recovery period too. Water and electricity could be out for a week or more in some storms. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family for at least 3 days, but ideally, 7 days. Also make sure you have extra cash, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and a portable crank or solar powered USB charger to power your cell phone.

Even a subtle roof leak that may not appear obvious from storm damage can produce mold inside of your home.

If you are effected by a storm, WE ARE HERE TO HELP! Our teams are ready and prepared before and after a storm hits. Whether it is a commercial or residential property, we are "ready for whatever happens"

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

There are so many ways that a structure can be damaged and could require emergency board up services of windows and doors, or large gaps in walls... Wind damage, falling trees and falling tree limbs, vehicles crashing into buildings are common causes. Vandalism and robbery accounts for many window board up jobs too.

The heat from fires can blow out window glass, and in some situations, fire fighters may intentionally break out specific windows to pump water into a structure to extinguish the fire.

One Surprisingly Effective Way to Succeed With Storm Damage Remediation

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

As you inspect your flood damaged home, make a plan to contact the IICRC certified and experienced team at SERVPRO for water removal services.

Removing water from a property quickly can significantly reduce the likelihood of permanent damages. However, in a flood situation, this is not always possible. You may need to evacuate the property or have returned from a weekend away to find your home ankle deep in water. Porous materials, like those that make up your sofa, armchairs or other soft furnishings as well as wood, can imbibe water over time making damages harder to remediate.

Our team is made up of highly trained individuals who can help you with flood damage. Typically, the longer water is allowed to stand the more harm it causes and we can quickly mobilize equipment like gas-powered pumps or truck-mounted water extractors to remove it. Where there is prolonged exposure we may need to use a different technique.

Dehumidifiers are commonly used in a home environment, particularly in humid periods of the year. They work by drawing moisture from the air and replacing it with dry air. Since water naturally migrates from wet to dry, dehumidifiers can also be used to draw moisture out of porous surfaces by drying the surrounding air to 40 GPP- grains of moisture per pound- or below.

SERVPRO can deploy two types of dehumidifier depending on the scale and breadth of the task at hand. Refrigerant dehumidifiers are the more common of the two. We use them in 80% of the services we complete. They are particularly useful in drawing moisture from fabrics like carpets as well as drywall. The other type of dehumidifier is desiccant, which use chemicals to dry below 40 GPP. These can be effective for denser materials, like hardwood or concrete floors, that have suffered prolonged exposure to moisture.

Removing the majority of standing water from a flooded property is a straightforward task. However, tackling that remaining percentage requires expertise and the right dehumidification equipment. SERVPRO is capable of assessing and applying advanced dehumidifiers to help restore your home to its preloss condition and preventing secondary damages after flooding.

Give your home the best chance of getting back to preloss condition, contact SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 today.

Are You Covered?

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 229.439.2048

When it comes to your homeowner’s insurance policy sometimes it is hard to know exactly what to look for when checking your coverage.  Many times, the average consumer doesn’t consider all the variables and the multitude of “what if’s” that could occur and cause damage to their home.  SERVPRO of Albany and Americus wants to help you make sure you are covered BEFORE disaster strikes.  One of the most common areas of gaps in coverage can occur in water loss situations.  An overwhelming majority of policies do not provide coverage for flood damage that is incurred from “rising water”.   This term is how most insurance companies will differentiate whether water damage is covered under the policy.  Rising water would be determined to be flood damage and most often only covered if you bought an additional flood policy.  Other water damage that would be covered would be water that filled the home as the result of a collapsed roof, broken windows etc.  If you aren’t sure of what your homeowner’s policy covers, we strongly encourage you to contact your agent today and ask questions.

Flood Water Facts

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Across the United States, flooding is one of the most commonly widespread weather-related disasters. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is always potential for flood damage.

Though you may have never experienced a flood in the past, there’s no level of security to assure that you won't in the future.  In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following safety tips:

  • Stay away from floodwaters as much as possible.  If you approach a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and water are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water.  They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If your home or business is ever affected by a flood, contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task.  The SERVPRO system is prepared to handle any size disaster.  The sooner work begins; the sooner your home or business can return “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Proofing Your Garage

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

When planning to protect your home from storms, make your garage one of your first priorities. Your garage is one of the most vulnerable areas in your home when it comes to high winds. Here are some tips to stormproof your garage:

Install a garage door with a high wind-resistance rating. Storms that bring with them extreme levels of wind will cause the most damage; when a garage is breached, the winds will batter the rest of your home. Water will start to come in, and even just an inch of water can cause unwanted, and costly, damage. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes, it’s recommended that you invest in a door that can withstand winds of 130 mph or higher. Doors with high impact-ratings will protect your home and belongings from flying debris.

Install a bracing system. You can reinforce your garage door with proper bracing. Most garage doors are secured only by the tracks or hinges, which will be no help during a powerful storm. A bracing system works by anchoring the door to the walls and floors and into each hinge.

Maintain your garage door. If there are any holes, cracks or breaches, these will allow storm winds through your garage door. Perform a monthly inspection and look for any of these types of issues as well as problems with the weather stripping or any parts of the garage door mechanisms and functionality. Perform the needed maintenance as soon as possible to stay in storm-readiness.

Secure all windows. If you have windows in your garage, these will also be weak points during extreme weather. Ensure they are in good repair and that the weather stripping is in great shape. Having wrought-iron window protection installed as well can go a long way to protect your glass from flying debris, such as rocks or tree limbs.

Install drainage and flood vents. Make sure that this vulnerable area of your home is properly outfitted for the drainage of large amounts of water. You can have a trench drain installed in front of this area and on the sides of your driveway to divert water, and flood vents inside the garage can drain any water coming inside quickly before levels rise and cause damage.

Here at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus, we handle clean up after house and business fires, and are well equipped to handle water damage. Mold remediation is also one of our specialties. Call us at 229-439-2048.

Different Types of Storm Damage

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Wind Damage Restoration

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

How can a roof leak and roof damage escape easy detection in this situation? Wind damage may loosen flashing, eventually causing another roof leak weeks after the storm. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce damp, moldy conditions inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Flooding and Recovery

Flood water frequently poses a risk in coastal areas. Yet heavy rains may cause river flooding miles inland also. If the surrounding terrain cannot absorb ground water, runoff contributes to flood water. Even residents of mountainous areas sometimes sustain varying degrees of flood damage if frozen pipes rupture. Flood pump failures contribute to basement flooding and contaminated ground water in some locations, too.

Flooding may disrupt municipal water systems. Experts need to assess ground water and evaluate the condition of pipes following flood damage. Hiring a storm restoration firm may allow you to begin your cleanup process even before water restoration occurs. (Cleaning before water restoration often proves essential yet challenging.) By relying upon a trained specialist, you'll usually obtain faster storm remediation. These experts may suggest ways to help mitigate flood water damage in the future, for instance, by requesting backup flood pump installation.

Keeping Your Home Safe From Storm Damage

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Storms are dangerous forces of nature that can be brutal, unpredictable, and strike without warning. Because they wreak such serious havoc, it’s important to take measures in keeping your home safe from potential storm damage.

So what can you do to be prepared? For starters, perform a full inspection of your home and its surrounding premises. You can do this personally or professionally. Check for leaks in your roof or windows, and make sure all exterior doors and windows are fitted correctly. Any cracks or gaps can lead to big problems during storms, so it’s important to fix up any you may find right away.

Next, check the condition of your shutters and rain gutters. Make sure they are sturdy and tight. If any are loose, get them fixed and tightened right away. Loose shutters and gutters can become dangerous in a storm because they are unstable and in some cases they can rip away from your house and blow around as debris. The same goes for any unstable large trees or loose tree limbs. Consider trimming back trees with any unhealthy looking branches that could be torn off in a storm.

If your home is older and has a drainage ditch in front of the property, inspect the area around it. Remove debris, dirt, and anything else that could obstruct that flow of water. This will prevent any blockage and clogging that could cause flooding.

Finally, have an emergency plan in place for your family to help ensure their safety in the event of a storm.

When a storm does hit, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has your back. We’ll take care of any emergency repairs or restorations your home may need. Give us a call at 229-439-2048.

Albany and Americus Homeowner's Guide to Preventing Storm Damage

7/21/2015 (Permalink)

Hail, high winds and flooding are possible during a severe thunderstorm.
