The Hidden Dangers of Improper Water Damage Handling: Mold Growth

Sealed of entry way during mold remediation job Sealed off entry way

Water damage is a common issue that many homeowners face, especially during winter months or heavy rain seasons. While it's essential to address water damage promptly, improper handling can lead to a hidden and potentially dangerous problem: mold growth. At SERVPRO® of Albany, we understand the risks associated with water damage and are committed to helping our community prevent the spread of mold.

The Connection Between Water Damage and Mold Growth

When water infiltrates your home due to leaks, floods, or other sources, it creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Mold spores are present everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. However, they require moisture to grow and reproduce. Here's how it happens:

  1. Moisture: Excess moisture from water damage provides the initial trigger for mold growth. Even small leaks or damp areas can serve as breeding grounds.

  2. Nutrient Source: Mold feeds on organic materials commonly found in homes, such as wood, drywall, and paper. These materials become food sources when they absorb water.

  3. Time: Mold spores can begin to grow and multiply within 24-48 hours of exposure to moisture. The longer water damage is left untreated, the more likely mold will develop.

  4. Temperature: Mold thrives in temperatures between 77°F and 86°F (25°C to 30°C), which are often found in indoor environments.

The Risks of Mold in Your Home

Mold growth not only damages your property but also poses health risks to you and your family. Exposure to mold can cause various health issues, particularly for individuals with allergies, asthma, or weakened immune systems. Common symptoms of mold exposure include:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Skin irritation
  • Eye irritation
  • Nasal congestion
  • Throat irritation
  • Coughing and sneezing

In severe cases, prolonged exposure to mold can lead to more severe health conditions. Therefore, addressing water damage promptly and effectively is crucial to preventing mold growth and safeguarding your family's well-being.

1/6/2024 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment being used to handle a broken pipe situation SERVPRO equipment in use to handle a ruptured pipe situation

A ruptured pipe in your home can be a nightmare, causing significant water damage and potential mold growth if not addressed promptly and correctly. In this SERVPRO blog post, we'll guide you through the steps to take when you discover a ruptured pipe in your home and explain how our expert team can assist you in mitigating the damage effectively.

Step 1: Turn Off the Water

The first and most crucial step is to shut off the water supply to the affected area. Locate the main water shut-off valve for your home and turn it off to stop the flow of water. If you're unsure about the location of the shut-off valve, it's essential to find out beforehand to act swiftly in emergencies.

Step 2: Electricity Safety

Ensure your safety by turning off the electricity to the affected area. Water and electricity do not mix well, and there is a risk of electrical shock or fire when dealing with water damage.

Step 3: Document the Damage

Take photos or videos of the damage caused by the ruptured pipe for insurance purposes. This documentation can be valuable when filing a claim.

Step 4: Remove Excess Water

Use towels, mops, or a wet/dry vacuum to remove as much water as possible from the affected area. The sooner you can start the drying process, the better.

Step 5: Call SERVPRO

Contact SERVPRO immediately to request our professional water damage restoration services. Our experienced technicians are available 24/7 and will respond quickly to your call.

How SERVPRO® Can Help

When you call SERVPRO for assistance with a ruptured pipe, you can expect the following:

  1. Inspection and Assessment: Our team will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the extent of the damage and develop a tailored restoration plan.

  2. Water Extraction: We use advanced equipment to extract excess water and moisture from your property, including carpeting, flooring, and walls.

  3. Drying and Dehumidification: Our industrial-grade air movers and dehumidifiers will be strategically placed to ensure thorough drying and prevent mold growth.

  4. Content Cleaning: We'll clean and restore your belongings affected by the water damage, employing specialized techniques and equipment.

  5. Mold Prevention: We take proactive measures to prevent mold growth, including moisture control and thorough drying.

  6. Restoration: Once the drying process is complete, we'll work on restoring your property to its pre-damage condition, ensuring it's safe and habitable.

Prevention Tips

While SERVPRO is here to help with water damage restoration, it's essential to take steps to prevent ruptured pipes in the first place:

  • Insulate pipes in cold areas to prevent freezing and expansion.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain plumbing systems.
  • Know the location of your water shut-off valve and how to use it.

When a ruptured pipe threatens your home, don't hesitate to call SERVPRO. Our swift response and professional expertise will help minimize the damage and restore your property to a safe and dry state. Your peace of mind is our priority.

Common Winter Weather Causes for Water Damage in Albany, GA, and SERVPRO® Recommendations

12/29/2023 (Permalink)

Puddled water after interior flooding Puddled water inside

Albany, GA, experiences its fair share of winter weather, which can bring its own set of challenges, including the potential for water damage. As temperatures drop and precipitation increases, it's crucial to be aware of the common causes of water damage during the winter months and how to prevent them. In this blog post, we'll explore these causes and provide valuable recommendations from our expert team at SERVPRO®.

Common Causes of Winter Water Damage:

  1. Frozen Pipes: Freezing temperatures can cause water in pipes to freeze and expand, leading to pipe bursts. This can result in significant water damage when the pipes thaw.

  2. Roof Leaks: Winter weather can cause ice dams on roofs, leading to the infiltration of melting snow and ice into your home through roof leaks.

  3. Foundation Cracks: Cold weather can exacerbate existing cracks in your home's foundation, allowing water to seep in during winter storms and heavy rains.

  4. Gutter Clogs: Leaves and debris can clog gutters and downspouts during the fall. When winter precipitation melts, it can overflow and damage your home's exterior and foundation.

SERVPRO® Recommendations to Prevent Winter Water Damage:

  1. Insulate Pipes: Ensure that exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like crawl spaces, are properly insulated to prevent freezing. Consider adding heat tape or cable for added protection.

  2. Regular Roof Inspections: Have your roof inspected before winter to identify and address any potential issues, such as damaged shingles or areas prone to ice dams. Promptly repair any damage.

  3. Seal Foundation Cracks: Inspect your home's foundation for cracks, and seal them with an appropriate waterproof sealant. This will help prevent water from seeping into your home.

  4. Clean Gutters: Before winter sets in, clean your gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water drainage. Consider installing gutter guards to prevent clogs.

  5. Weatherproof Windows and Doors: Check for gaps or drafts around windows and doors. Seal any openings with weatherstripping or caulk to keep cold air and moisture out.

  6. Keep Heat On: If you plan to be away from your home during winter, maintain a minimum level of heat to prevent pipes from freezing.

What to Do If Winter Water Damage Occurs:

Despite your best efforts, water damage can still occur during winter weather. If you experience water damage, follow these steps:

  1. Safety First: Ensure your safety and the safety of your family by turning off electrical power to affected areas if safe to do so.

  2. Contact SERVPRO®: Call our experts at SERVPRO® immediately. Our rapid response team will assess the damage and begin the mitigation process promptly.

  3. Document Damage: Take photos or videos of the damage for insurance purposes.

  4. Prevent Further Damage: If it's safe, you can try to remove excess water by mopping and blotting. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs to prevent further damage.

  5. Do Not Delay: Water damage can escalate quickly. The sooner you call for professional help, the better chance you have of minimizing damage and restoration costs.

Winter weather can be harsh, but with proactive measures and the support of SERVPRO®, you can protect your Albany, GA, home from common winter water damage causes. Water Damage Cleanup in Lower Levels of Your Home- The Pros Explain the Process

8/6/2023 (Permalink)

water damage cleanup in lower levels of flooded home SERVPRO experts are bought in to dry out basement of a local Albany home.

Cleaning Up Your Water Damaged Basement

Whether from a storm, a pipe burst, or a particularly nasty leak, basement flooding is a relatively common affliction to homes across the nation. Water naturally seeks to flow to the lowest ground and pool there, and this is often, unfortunately, the nearest home's basement. Basement flooding can range in intensity and damage, from just fractions of an inch of water to full submersion of the area. Regardless, restoring a basement after a flood is a challenging task, and requires professional training and equipment.

Pumping and Extraction
The first step in cleaning up and basement water damage in Albany and Americus is to pump out any remaining water. Depending on how much water is in the basement, extractors can be either portable or mounted on a truck. Simply put, we use these machines to pump water out of a structure to its exterior in massive volumes.

Air Movers and Dehumidifiers
When removing the remaining traces of moisture from a basement, the first step involves heavy air movers, moving large volumes of air rapidly across surfaces to reduce their drying time. Then, we bring in dehumidifiers, which remove moisture from the air which is picked up by air movers. In this way, the two machines work together to dry out a room quickly and remove any extra moisture within.

Deodorization
Waters, especially floodwaters from a storm, can leave terrible smells in a room even after it has dried. Thus, deodorizers in the form of ultra-low volume and thermal foggers are brought out, to mask even the heaviest of smells and make the room livable again.

Sanitization and Cleaning
Once odors and all water have been removed from the basement, professional SERVPRO cleaners move in to sanitize, scrub, and repair each surface in the basement. It is important to let our professionals do this task, as there may still be harmful substances in the environment such as chemical stains and mold growth.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is a professional, locally-owned and operated cleanup and restoration company which is trained and equipped to deal with the toughest water damage cases in the area. Contact us for 24/7 emergency service at (229) 439-2048.

The aftermath of floods and fires present homeowners in Albany and Americus with many problems. Water damage is one of the most serious and pressing issues that has to be addressed immediately. If you do not respond to your water damage issues quickly, your home can become an optimal space for mold and mildew to thrive. Additionally, water damage can adversely impact the structural integrity of your property, along with personal items and furnishings. The importance of you contacting a water damage restoration company such as SERVPRO, as soon as your home is under duress from flood or fire, cannot be over-emphasized. Learn more about some of the benefits that securing a professional water damage service can bring by reviewing the following information:

Water Cleanup of Your Albany and Americus Home

Water cleanup, the extraction process for your home, should be initiated within 24 hours of the event. This water removal is essential because mold and mildew start to proliferate 48-72 hours after the accumulation of water and moisture. This growth is a secondary water damage result that be even more degrading to your property than the initial water damage created by flood, leakage, or fire. For this reason, the water damage professionals from SERVPRO advise in starting the cleanup process as quickly as possible.

Repairing Your Albany and Americus Home

Following a flood or fire, your residential property has likely been impacted by structural and possibly electrical damage. For these reasons, it is probably unsafe for you to reenter your home right after the water damaging occurrence. Instead, you should wait to attain approval for reentry from the officials (such as a fire department). When you hire a water damage restoration company like SERVPRO, they will make an assessment and thorough inspection leading to the proper course of action. Then the restoration process can commence from water removal to cleanup to repair and finally, restoration.  If necessary, these water damage experts can send recommended outside contractors to your property, upon the approval of you and your insurance carrier, to speed the repair process along. SERVPRO will provide closing documentation for the work performed and the drying out of your home.

Sometimes you need to go back to the basics when dealing with common restoration services needs. Approaching storm season, it is fitting to start with what water damage is!

Water damage restoration is the process of mitigating and restoring a property that has been affected by water damage. This could occur as a result of floods, leaks, burst pipes, or other water-related incidents. It is important for several reasons:

1. Preventing further damage: Prompt water damage restoration is crucial in preventing further damage to the property and its contents. Water can quickly spread and seep into building materials, causing structural damage, weakening foundations, and promoting mold growth. By quickly removing the water and drying out the affected areas, further damage can be minimized.

2. Mold prevention: Standing water or excessive moisture provides the ideal breeding ground for mold growth. Mold can start growing within 24-48 hours after water damage occurs. It not only damages property but also poses health risks to occupants. Effective water damage restoration helps to dry out the affected areas, preventing the growth and spread of mold, and ensuring a healthy living or working environment. That’s why it’s important to have our experts on speed dial.

3. Salvaging belongings: Water damage can ruin furniture, electronics, documents, and personal belongings. SERVPRO water damage restoration professionals come in to assess the extent of damage and employ techniques to salvage items that are salvageable. This can help minimize financial loss and restore sentimental or valuable items that may hold significance.

4. Structural integrity: Water damage can compromise the structural integrity of a building. It can weaken foundations, walls, and floors, leading to long-term problems if not addressed promptly. Our crews have the expertise and equipment to assess structural issues and take appropriate measures to restore the integrity of the affected areas.

5. Insurance claims: Water damage restoration is often required to initiate an insurance claim. Insurance policies typically cover water damage caused by sudden and accidental events. However, insurance providers may require a thorough assessment and documentation of the damage to process the claim. Working with our team is the most sure fire way to ensure that the necessary documentation and evidence are provided to support the insurance claim.

Water damage restoration is important for mitigating further damage, preventing mold growth, salvaging belongings, preserving the structural integrity of a building, and facilitating insurance claims. It is a vital step in recovering from water-related incidents and returning the affected property to its pre-damaged condition.

You don’t need to handle this alone. Putting our contact information into your mobile phone, and having it on hand at home, is the best way to make sure you are ok when water damage comes your way!

How to Evaluate the Subfloor After a Water Damage Disaster in Albany and Americus Georiga.

3/2/2023 (Permalink)

Evaluate the Subfloor After a Water Damage Disaster in Albany and Americus Georgia.

Imagine coming home to water all over your kitchen floor! It has seeped from behind the fridge, spread across the kitchen and into the family room. Some of the water has begun to find its way into the carpet, the under pad, and the subfloor. The owners were only gone for a week and never turned off the main water valve. The plastic pipe connecting the water line to the fridge for cold water and ice was over ten years old. This pipe had developed a pinhole-sized leak, which over a week caused a great deal of water to spread across the floors of the home.

SERVPRO responds to water damage events in Albany and Americus of all kinds. A water leak from older plastic pipes is becoming quite common. These flexible quarter-inch pipes are aging and can spring a leak at any time. Many unsuspecting homeowners come home from work to find a puddle around their fridge. A great deal of water can leak all over your home over a week or more while the homeowner is on vacation.

Evaluate the Subfloor

One of the first steps a SERVPRO crew chief does is evaluate the condition of the floor and the extent of the water damage. He or she makes sure that it is safe. How far has the water spread? Has the carpet delaminated? Has the water penetrated and been absorbed by the subfloor?

Evaluate the subfloor when the carpet and under pad are soaked in water. Can the subfloor be dried sufficiently, or does it need to be replaced? The subfloor is made up of wood particles glued together and pressed into a four foot by eight-foot sheets in various thicknesses. This type of subfloor expands and loses strength when exposed to water over time. Mold may also develop.

Remove Water and Moisture

Water and moisture are removed using water extractors, air movers, and dehumidifiers. It helps to also turn on the homes AC. If the carpet has not delaminated, pull it away from the floor, and air movers blow air over the subfloor to draw moisture from the floor. Replace several sections if the floor has absorbed water and began to expand.

Common Questions About Water Damage

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Carpeted hallway with water damage Questions about water damage restoration? Give us a call! 229-439-2048

Fortunately for many homeowners throughout Southwest Georgia, water damages are something that they do not have to deal with very often.  This lack of frequency, however, can make handling water damages when they DO arise stressful and confusing.  To help you through the process, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is committed to staying in communication with both you, the homeowner, and additional stakeholders, including insurance representatives, to explain the steps taking place.  From the initial inspection through the completion of the project, our team will work diligently to provide the highest possible level of customer service as we mitigate and remediate your property.  While every water damage situation is unique, there are a few common questions that we are regularly asked:

  1. How long will it take to dry? This is dependent upon multiple factors, including the amount of saturation, the types of materials affected, and the atmospheric conditions surrounding the water damaged area.  The fundamentals of drying science are greatly affected by temperature and air movement.  For example, the more air movement present, the less time drying should take.  Your dedicated project manager will work with you to explain these factors and provide you with an estimated timeline for drying to be completed.
  2. Will demolition be needed? SERVPRO of Albany and Americus always first tries to restore vs. replace when possible.  Depending on the type, or category, of water damage, however, demolition may be necessary.  Category three, or grossly contaminated water, requires demolition of porous materials.  Also, depending on saturation level, there are times where clean water damaged materials may not effectively dry, and will instead require demolition.  Your project manager will analyze the conditions present, provide a scope of work, and communicate the recommended steps to be taken.
  3. Can I turn the equipment moved or turned off? To dry as quickly as possible, the equipment must be left running for the duration of the job.  Equipment should not be moved around, as it has been placed for optimal drying conditions by your SERVPRO technician.  We will monitor the equipment on site for proper functioning, record the drying progress daily, and remove equipment as materials begin to dry.

When water damage strikes, trust the team at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus to help.  We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making us “Faster to any size disaster.”  To learn more about the services we offer, ask any additional questions, or request help, please give us a call: 229-439-2048.

There are a multitude of different sources that can cause water damage to a structure, both internal and external.  Understanding where the water came from, the level of contamination present in the water, and where all the water has traveled is imperative to formulating the right mitigation plan.  So, what are some of the most common water (damage) sources in our area?

  • Issues with water supply lines. Whether plumbing that brings clean water into the building or a hose running from the wall to supply the ice maker, sources of CLEAN water account for many water damages.  Cleaning up Category 1, or clean water, allows for much more of the affected area to be dried and salvaged.
  • Mother Nature. Including wind driven rain, rising flood waters, or leaking windowsills, mother nature can move water throughout many structures.  These waters can carry a variety of contaminants and must be treated much differently than damages from clean water.  Depending on the specific determined source of storm waters, different approaches may be taken in the mitigation and restoration process.
  • Clogs and Back-Ups. Toilets, tubs, sinks, dishwashers….the list goes on.  Anything that has a drain out of the building has the potential to back up into the building.  These back-ups can be grossly unsanitary and must be handled both professionally and carefully for safety.  Often, after a Category Three, or black water, damage, many porous surfaces must be discarded.

Even the smallest water damaged areas have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly restoration future restoration bills is to mitigate water damages as soon as possible after they happen. SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has the professional equipment, highly trained staff, and proven experience to detect and dry hidden water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage extent and expense during a water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO of Albany and Americus will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of industry leading equipment.

Here are a few of the tools used by our team to detect hidden moisture, mitigate water damages, and clean and sanitize your property after water damages have occurred:

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in structural components.  Moisture sensors help answer the question “is it wet?”
  • Moisture Meters are used to determine the moisture content of structural materials, including drywall, flooring, and cabinetry.  The use of a moisture meter helps to answer the question “how wet is it?”
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, along with the moisture content readings of the materials in the structure, your SERVPRO of Albany and Americus technician can accurately calculate the most optimal drying conditions.
  • Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.
  • Thermal Foggers dispense solvent based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles, and other places where cleaning cannot reach.

Where there is water, there is the potential for water damage.  From leaking pipes to appliance malfunction, the opportunity for water to end up where it shouldn’t be is very high for homeowners throughout our community.  So, what are some of the most common causes of water damage, and how can we reduce this risk?

  • Damaged Pipes: Whether from aging, continued use, or unexpected malfunction, damage to piping and plumbing is one of the leading causes of residential water damage.  Check common leak areas, such as underneath sinks, regularly for water staining.  If living in an older home, consider having a professional update the plumbing system for the property.  Avoid pouring corrosive chemicals down the drains that can weaken the integrity of pipes.
  • Appliances: Dishwashers, Refrigerators, and Clothes Washing Machines all share one commonality: water lines.  These lines have the potential, over time, to crack, break, or disconnect, allowing a continuous flow of water to go where it need not be.  When moving appliance, always check water supply lines to make sure they stay properly connected.  Periodically check for any cracks or dry rotting in hoses.  If a leak does occur, discontinue water supply to the appliance until the leak has been corrected.
  • Clogged Drains: Back-ups from toilets, bathtubs, or sinks can occur very easily when the draining system is obstructed.  Consider using strainers inside of sinks and tubs to catch debris that can cause a clog.  If you notice water draining more slowly than normal, consider employing a plumber to check your drainage system for obstructions.  Do not leave running water in sinks or tubs unattended.
  • Water Heater Malfunction: Your water heater has the potential to release an extreme amount of water in a very short amount of time if it malfunctions.  Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when it comes to maintenance of your water heater.  Periodically check for any leaks, water staining, or standing water around you water heater and, if found, address these issues immediately.

Water Damage FYI – Categories of Water

6/14/2021 (Permalink)

Drying equipment in a commercial office building When water damage strikes, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for help!

Water damages to your property can arise from a variety of sources, including external flooding, broken pipes, or backed up sewage lines.  The source of the water intrusion plays a role in defining the “category of water” that is to be remediated.  Different processes are followed depending on the category of the water involved; each with their own unique characteristics.  Knowing the kind, or category, of water that has infiltrated your property is important in the restoration process.

Category 1, or “Clean Water” is water from a clean source, such as a broke supply line or faucet.  If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 depending on the factors such as length of time left sitting, temperature of the structure, and contact with contaminants.

Category 2, or “Gray Water” has a high level of contamination that could cause illness or discomfort if ingested.  Sources of category 2 water may include washing machine overflow, dishwasher overflow, or toilet overflow that does NOT contain feces.

Category 3, or “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness if ingested, and physical contact should be avoided.  Sources of category 3 water may include floodwaters, which often contain biological contaminants, toilet overflow that does contain feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Having a trusted cleanup and restoration professional to call in case of a water damage emergency is paramount to making your loss “Like it never even happened.”  SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has the training, equipment, and experience to take care of water damages of all sizes.  To learn more, or request service, give us a call at 229-439-2048, We’re Here to Help!

Folks who have lived on the east coast for any length of time are fully aware that some of those areas are tornado prone and that Mother Nature provides an opportunity for damage to be done. You should also know, or be aware, that it's not just a tornado with high winds that can cause havoc. Things as simple as a broken or damaged concrete slab can produce water in home, as well as water in business. Water Damage may not reach the status of a 100 mile per hour tornado, but the flood damage can be annoying and costly. Actually, in a recent survey, it was found that water slab leaks are quite common in Georgia and hard to detect.

Mitigation And Water Damage Restoration

There is not a whole lot worse that could happen to a person than standing knee deep in smelly water in your home with thoughts of drying, water cleanup and air movement running through your mind. Well, maybe you were not prepared for this water damage and flood damage episode, but to prevent future problems of water in home or water in business - think: water damage restoration and mitigation. You should also understand that mitigation should be handled by an experienced and licensed professional water restoration contractor, not your neighbor or your cousin Bob. That said, if you are a homeowner or business owner with a water damage or flood damage conundrum, let's do a question and answer primer.

#1 - What are the effects of water damage, flood damage, water in home or water in business as well as water cleanup? If water makes a direct hit, it will cause drywall to sag, and fall apart. If wood is involved, it will swell and buckle, then rot.

#2 - Can water in home or water in business be prevented? There is not much you can do to an act of nature. But strangely enough, most significant water damage or flooding damage is caused by indoor plumbing failures like a leaky underground pipe.

#3 - How long does it take for the drying process or complete water cleanup? Mostly, drying and water cleanup will depend largely on the extent of damage, saturation and how long the water in home or water in business has been exposed to water.

Restoration, Air Movement, And Mitigation!

Using a certified restoration company to handle the drying, air movement, water cleanup and overall water restoration is best left for the professionals. They know why the air movement feels dry and usually have been in the water damage restoration business a long time.
Note: If you are wondering why a water damage restoration company would need to have access to your water in home or water in business once the water has been extracted and the drying process has begun, the professional contractor will need to continue monitor and control the moisture, humidity levels along with the air movement until everything in the environment is returned to normal and no mold threatens.

Drying Mat in Use on Residential Flooring in Leesburg, GA SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has the equipment, experience, and expertise to handle water damages of all categories, and all sizes!

When it comes to mitigating water damages, one of the most important steps that the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus take is to identify the category, or type, of water that has caused the damage.  This categorization helps to define the procedure that will be followed for the mitigation and restoration process, the equipment needed, and the various techniques that may be utilized throughout the course of the job.  There are three categories of water that we consider in this process:

  • Category 1, or “Clean Water” is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
  • Category 2, or “Gray Water” has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
  • Category 3, or “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth. Handling damages caused by category 3 water requires the use of PPE, or Personal Protective Equipment, to perform the mitigation safely.

In order to limit the amount of damage sustained by your home or business after a water loss, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus offer 24 hour a day, 7 day a week emergency response.  Serving communities throughout Southwest Georgia, our team of IICRC trained professionals has the equipment, expertise, and experience to handle damages of all sizes, and We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Be Familiar with your Flood Insurance Policy

Flood insurance is something that is very important to have if you live in an area that is susceptible to water-related storm damage. But this type of policy does not cover everything.

Look over your individual policy to find out exactly where you are and are not covered.  Learn what type of damage is not covered by most flood insurance policies below.

Internal Malfunctions

Some homeowners believe that all water damage is covered. but this is not the case . Flood damage only covers water damage that is a result of external sources like excess rainwater or a hurricane. If a pipe bursts and causes a “flood” in your basement, this will not be covered.

Swimming Pools

Another common misconception is that because your pool is outside your home, it will be covered.  If a crack in the liner causes the water to drain into your home, this will also not be covered.

Secondary Damage

While you may be covered for water that is a result of a storm, any residual effects will be your responsibility. For instance, your policy should cover extraction of excess rainwater. But if moisture remains, which leads to mold, your flood insurance will not cover this.

Living Expenses

A flood in your home may force you to relocate until the remediation process is completed. Living expenses, such as hotels and food during this time period will not be covered by your flood policy.

As mentioned above, look at your flood insurance policy to find the limitations so that you are not surprised in the event of flood damage.  If you do sustain storm-related flood damage, call SERVPRO of Albany & Americus! 229.439.2048

Terrifying Truth About Laundry

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 If you have any questions regarding water or fire damage give us a call at 229.439.2048

Most of us pride ourselves on being incredibly talented multi-taskers, going through life, and getting stuff done. That’s great and all, but there comes a time where it’s actually dangerous to multi-task. For instance, laundry is not something you want to do while you’re away from home because two major disasters can happen the minute you leave your home.

Water Loss Potential

The first one being a water loss when your washing machine’s water line breaks or starts leaking. Another possibility is the hose hooked up to your washer can actually become detached due to the shaking and shifting of the machine. Wouldn’t that be a fun surprise to come home and see your entire laundry room floor is covered in water? Actually, no. It’s not fun. We would know.

Fire Loss Potential

The second major disaster that is likely to occur is a fire sparking from the clogged lint in your dryer vent. With fires being so unpredictable, we strongly advise you do not hit the start button before you run some errands in town. An extra precaution we advise is cleaning out your lint trap before and after each use, and on a yearly basis, clean out the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.

Lesson Learned

We know it’s tempting to get two things done at once, but this is one task that needs more of your attention and presence.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event. We can handle any size disaster!

If you experience a serious disaster at your office or facility call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

There is never a good time to experience a property disaster.

Providing emergency property damage services for commercial establishments is one of the main services we provide at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus.

Water damage/flooding events are the most common disaster at offices and other commercial properties. Fire is second, followed by autos crashing into structures, falling trees, vandalism and others.

There are many restoration companies that are prepared to dry a wet building, only a few companies are equipped to help keep a company open or return them quickly to operation. It’s the business interruption solution services that can make the most difference to business survival. Insurance can pay to restore the business and in some cases even cover lost revenue. However, if a building remains closed so long that customers go elsewhere, then the “damage” is really more devastating than the structural repair.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus understands how to dry a wet structure. We can also help with electronics, office equipment, manufacturing equipment and the other parts of a business that might be impacted. Our team can set up electrical power generators and lighting. We will place storage pods and tents at a job site along with security so that temporary workstations can be set up.

If you experience a serious disaster at your office or facility call us at 229-439-2048.

Unless you have experienced a serious water damage event at your office or home, you may not be aware that sometimes contents and furniture must be removed from a water damaged location.

Outstanding technicians work hard to remove furniture so it won't become ruined by the wet (humid) interior environment. Or, they may have to remove contents so they're not "in the way." It's a no-brainer to understand that drying or repairing an empty room is far easier and faster than working around a furnished space.

At SERVPRO of Albany and Americus, we will use our experience to determine when a "pack-out" is the best option. When it's the right choice, we will let you know and we will even speak with your insurance adjuster or property manager.

When we perform a packout, often on an emergency basis, we have a company motto, "SERVPRO of Albany and Americus.. the careful movers."  That phrase really means something because the faster we work at removing contents, the better chance we have of protecting and saving them. However, there's no point removing furniture only to damage it during the pack out. That's why we put extra "care" in the moving process.

At SERVPRO of Albany and Americus we're well known for performing fire cleanup, water damage mitigation, mold remediation and specialized cleaning... we are also proud of the support service we provide such as pack-out and storage.

Should your office or home suffer any type of damage, we're here to make it... "Like it never even happened."

At your service... SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 229-439-2048.

How to Prepare for Water Damage in 5 Steps

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

Most water damage that happens to your home is uncontrollable and unpredictable. It could potentially cost you thousands of dollars. When the water starts coming into your home, there is not much you can do to stop it but there is a couple things you can do to prepare for it. Here are a few steps you can take so you can be prepared for the worst.

Step 1: Stop the Source of the Water
If it is possible, stop the water at its source. If it has to do with your plumbing then turn off your water line as soon as possible. This will help with decreasing the amount of damage.
When the flooding occurs from storm water, there is no stopping a storm but you can try and divert the water away from your home by blocking entry points.

Step 2: Think Safety
If it is safe, then shut off all electrical sources by turning the circuit breakers or unplug devices. Water and electricity don’t mix, remember that. Make sure everyone, including children, are away from standing water.

Step 3: Protect Your Possessions
Try and remove or raise your furniture from flood water. Water soaked furniture begin to mold very quick and you the last thing you will want is to throw away all of your belongings after a flood. Protect the things that are irreplaceable rather then carpet and other flooring.

Step 4: Contact Your Insurance Company
Now is the time to call your insurance and see how they will approach the water remediation. All insurance companies have professionals who specialize in this kind of emergency so they will have the best people to restore your home back to normal. Do not try to remove the water by yourself. You can just end up cause more damage.

Step 5: Work With the Professionals
When you are choosing a company to perform your water remediation; you need to compare everyone highs and lows. Make sure they have good reviews and are available at your earliest request. SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is highly dependable and will exceed your expectations for your water remediation.

One of the strangest water damage situations that our company responded to was in a four story Victorian house in Americus, Georgia, that had been converted to small apartments.

During a domestic argument, a wife slashed a waterbed that was in a bedroom on the top floor. The 100 gallons of water flowed down through the floor causing flooding to many rooms below. The water damage affected every resident in the house.

What To Do If Your Basement Floods

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

4 out of 5 homes are ruined due to unexpected floods yearly.

While heavy rainfall is a very common cause for flooding basements, there are several other causes of basement flooding. Some of these major causes are:

    • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
    • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
    • Storm sewer backup
    • Sanitary sewer backup
    • Foundation drainage failure
    • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Because basements are the lowest part of a home and generally built underground, the basement is prone to suffering from flooding and high moisture levels. High moisture levels are worrisome as well due to the risk of microbial growth.

If you have any questions or need help, call us at (229) 439-2048

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus will always respond to your call within 1 hour, begin the water extraction process within 4 hours, and notify the adjuster no later than 8 hours from the time of your loss. When Water Damage Moves Beyond the Stained-Ceiling Stage in Your Home

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for your water damage needs at 229-439-2048.

Water is everywhere around us, but when this life-giving liquid exists in our homes, we expect it to remain where it cannot do any harm. Sometimes it escapes and makes its presence known but in seemingly minor ways.

Other times, however, your property seems to develop not only visible and unsightly water damage but also the kind that ruins the interior of your home. What many homeowners in Albany never realize about water damage can end up costing them quite a bit of money.

Any type of water leakage, regardless of how slight it seems, means that water exists inside your home in places where it should not. Stains may not seem like severe damage, but they often indicate precisely that. The moisture creating stains on upper walls and ceilings did not appear there like magic. This moisture traveled there to these locations from other areas of your home.

As it traveled through the materials comprising your home, it affected them. Because this often happens within areas that you rarely or never see, it stays hidden and unknown to you. Significant water damage typically can happen months before stained ceilings show up in your home's interior. A side effect of this intrusive water, possibly from a leaky toilet, a loose shingle, or even a window left open during a rainstorm, often includes stains on upper areas of rooms and possibly wavy or blistering paint.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus technicians can help determine the pathways the water took and examine the materials from Point A to Point B for damage. Many facets of your home can become compromised, damaged, or worse by causing other types of damage to start developing in your home. Microbial populations can proliferate once water becomes available to them. Who wants mold growing in their home? Drywall and Sheetrock can begin to crumble.

Wherever damaging effects occur, we can skillfully mitigate the problem and make your home "Like it never even happened." quickly. We also ensure that the source of water is fixed and cannot create future damage that you must deal with later. In the case of major leaks or drips, we advise the homeowner to call a certified plumber.
SERVPRO of Albany and Americus can help you whenever you find water damage and its telltale stains. Call us at (229) 439-2048 to reach our 24-hour helpline and get to the bottom of what ails your home.

Outdoor Grilling Safety Tips

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

July is the peak month for grill fires. Roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Here are some helpful tips to the homeowners getting ready to grill up some goodies this summer.

1.) Make sure that your grill is placed far away from your home.

2.) Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

3.) Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

4.) NEVER leave your grill unattended.

5.) If you use starter fluid, never add any other flammable liquids to the fire.

6.) When you’re done grilling, be sure to let the coals cool completely before disposing of them into a metal container.

Even when all proper precautions are taken, some accidents are inevitable. In case of a fire, try and use a fire extinguisher. If the situation is worse, call 911. Once the fire is put out and the damage is assessed, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus. We would love to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Do you know where your shutoff valve is?

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

Main shut off valve outside.

In case of a plumbing emergency, it is always a good idea to educate yourself on how (and where) to turn off your main water supply - as well as the isolation valves on your various plumbing fixtures. A ruptured line, burst pipe, or sewage backup can wreak havoc on your home and potentially cost you thousands in water damage and water bills.

In severe cold weather, the water in your pipes can freeze. When water freezes, it expands and can burst the pipe, not matter how thick or strong it may be. If it's too late and the pipe has already burst, turn off your main water valve as fast as you can to prevent further damages.

Being able to contain the situation as soon as possible will greatly help with damage control and allow a wider window of time for help to arrive (if the situation calls for it). Everyone in your home should know exactly where the water shutoff valve is located and how to turn it off.

Additionally, if you are going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, it is highly recommended that you turn off the main water valve.

Where is the main water shutoff valve located?

This is the million-dollar question. Your main water shutoff valve could be located in several different areas. If you have a home with a basement and crawlspace, it is probably located on an interior wall near the front of the house, where the water comes in from the water meter. In this case, it is most likely hiding in plain sight. If your home was built on a slab, the valve might be located near the hot water heater or inside your garage.

What to do if water is in your home.

IICRC and SERVPRO

One of the worst nightmares for any homeowner is finding water in the basement or anywhere in the home, and in most cases, the only way to deal with such a situation is to bring in a professional. Excess water, especially when it is contaminated, has the potential to cause a great deal of damage, and if the problem is not dealt with properly, the situation can quickly get out of hand. This is especially true when water is pooling in the home and coming in contact with organic materials like drywall or fabric.

Water in the basement can be caused by a lot of factors. The room may sit under the water table, which will slowly push water into the home. A disaster like a flood can quickly fill the room with fluid, as well as a burst pipe or other plumbing mishap. No matter what causes the water to build up in the home, it will take a certified team to remove it and restore the basement effectively.

There are a couple steps, though, that a homeowner can take to minimize damage and make the home safe to navigate through. If a pipe burst or is leaking, then cutting off the supply line into the home can halt the problem. Also, switching off the home’s power may be necessary, as an electrical discharge can make walking through water exceedingly dangerous and cause a fire.

Safety is the primary concern when contending with excess moisture, and a certified crew will be able to get the home restored in while avoiding any dangerous situations.

How Basement Water Damage is Cleaned Up

7/28/2016 (Permalink)

Whether from a storm, a pipe burst, or a particularly nasty leak, basement flooding is a relatively common affliction to Albany and Americus homes.

Camilla Water Damage Clean Up — Why is Fast Response So Important?

7/21/2015 (Permalink)

Water damage is not to be treated lightly.

The Key to Successfully Restore Water Damaged Areas

Camilla water damage is not to be treated lightly. Experts recommend that professional treatment should begin within the first 48 hours after the damage has been discovered. This is critical to minimize the growth of toxic molds and bacteria that can damage the integrity of the structure and also put at risk the health of its’ occupants. Studies have found that molds and bacteria will start to grow on untreated wet drywall in less than 48 hours. In addition to inhibiting toxic microbial growth, the treatment also limits permanent damage to the structure itself.

It is essential to secure a contractor who specializes in Camilla water damage, such as SERVPRO, to begin the cleanup process as early as possible. Allowing the trained service professionals to assess the extent of the damage and begin treatment early will reduce the amount of permanent damage sustained to the structure and personal effects. Remediation begins by removing the water as soon as possible. Extraction pumps will be used to remove visible water. The removal of wet materials, such as carpets, drywall and insulation, will also be part of the necessary actions performed by the trained professionals. Drying out the affected area is critical to minimize the growth of bacteria and mold. Commercial dryers and high efficiency dehumidifiers will be used to complete the water removal process.

Ensuring that the level of moisture is at an acceptable level, the restoration team will monitor the area with a hygrometer. This is especially important for small closed in spaces, behind cabinetry or in recessed areas of the structure. Beginning the reconstruction before the moisture level has been reduced to normal levels increases the probability that mold and mildew will become an issue in the future.

How successful the complete restoration of the structure greatly depends on how soon the trained professionals, like SERVPRO, are able to start the process. SERVPRO offer 24-hour availability, and they have personnel ready to begin the water removal process immediately. Water damage is disheartening, but letting a trained team of professionals handle the cleanup and restoration of the structure provides peace of mind.
